The recently renamed Island Surge, formally the Victoria Phantoms, is a carded competitive AA level women’s team that competes in the South Coast Women’s Hockey League (SCWHL) and currently the only AA level women’s team on Vancouver Island. Our SCWHL season starts at the end of September and finishes by mid-March and is governed under the umbrella of BC Hockey and Canada Hockey respectively. This league provides opportunity for competitive players to compete at the highest level of women’s hockey on our Canadian west coast. The majority of teams reside in the lower mainland but extend as far north as Kamloops and here in Victoria to the south. Most teams consist of graduated high performance midget Rep players and returning graduate university or college players in the age range of 18-30 years of age. There are approximately 28 league games in a season and a small amount of travel will be required, usually 4 times per season playing 3-4 away games per trip with home games typically played in Victoria on Saturday night and late Sunday morning.
